Teaching Support Services Available to Course Masters

Course Materials

Lotus Notes Licenses

The Office of Medical Student Education provides two Lotus Notes licenses for each first- and second-year course: one for the course master and one for an additional staff or faculty member involved in the course. Additional licenses can be requested for lecturers interested in using Notes (contact Kelly Noll, nollk@wustl.edu for additional licenses). For installation, training, support, or more information, contact Kelly Noll.

Web-only accounts are available for faculty members who do not have Notes. Password- protected, read-only versions of the Notes databases can be accessed via the Web through any browser. Interested parties should contact Kelly Noll for an account.

Entering Course Materials on Lotus Notes

You should begin updating the majority of your syllabus at least six to eight weeks in advance of the start of your course. For assistance, please contact Linda Hanson at hansonl@wustl.edu

Please provide contact information in your syllabus for student reference (e.g., your e-mail address, phone number, secretary’s name, e-mail address, phone number, etc.).

Please provide a complete list of instructors/presenters/teaching assistants for your course. This information is necessary for the scheduling and curriculum databases.

PowerPoint presentations are also processed and put into Notes. A copy of the PPT should be e-mailed to the Medical School Central IT Sevices Audiovisual department (mscits-av@msnotes.wustl.edu) and to Jamie Breuer in the Curriculum Office (breuerj@wustl.edu) prior to each lecture. Slides presented in lectures are scanned after each presentation and put into Notes.

One-on-one training for entering course information in Notes is available. Contact Linda Hanson (hansonl@wustl.edu) or Jason Crustals (crustalsj@wustl.edu) to schedule a training appointment.

Syllabus/Handout Printing

Kelly Noll will need a copy-ready syllabus two weeks prior to the course start date.

Computerized Schedule

Course masters and support staff should enter their course schedule directly into the Lotus Notes computerized schedule database. Information should be kept as up-to-date as possible. Please release any unused rooms as soon as possible for use by other courses. Contact Kelly Noll for assistance.

If you would like help in copying your exam, Kelly Noll will need your exam three days in advance of the exam date.

Teaching Resources

Resource Library

To help in your course preparation there is Teaching Resource Information available in the Medical Library. You will find information on such topics as preparing instructional objectives, constructing written test questions and teaching tips. This information is also available to check out. Contact Lina Hanson for further information.

Educational Software

Assistance will be provided to course masters who are interested in identifying software to supplement the curriculum and the educational process. Call MSCITS (362-2793) for further information.

Grant Funding

Assistance is available to help course masters identify funding sources for innovative instructional methods. Many WUSM courses are regularly introducing teaching innovations. Unfortunately, some ideas are not financially feasible without outside support. Do you have a unique idea that you would like to try in your course but are unable to implement because of a lack of funds? If so, the Office of Medical Student Education is available to assist you in locating agencies which award grants in your area of interest.

In order to pursue funding opportunities, your idea should be:

  • Unique among medical schools nationally

  • Of educational benefit to WUSM students

  • Able to be evaluated

Call Heather Hageman (362-5433) to describe your project. The longer the lead time before you actually introduce the innovation, the better the chance that you can secure the funding.
